Brian Bodine has been living in the Central Virginia area for the last 14 years. An avid outdoorsman, he has taken whitetails up and down the east coast as well as elk and mule deer out west. Growing up along the coast, he spent his adolescence mating on charter boats in pursuit of marlin, tuna, sharks and learning the art of waterfowling.
Now living in Scottsville, he quickly came to value the James River, which provides some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in the east and maybe the country.
Hunting the same countryside that Teddy Roosevelt once did, (his hunting cottage, Pine Knott, is three miles from our headquarters) this area of the country holds as much game as it is scenic. Its rolling hills in the shadows of the Blue Ridge Mountains contain deer, turkey, bear, and a variety of bird hunting opportunities. Brian has the skill and local knowledge to make your adventure as enjoyable as it will be successful.
Privateland Leases
Razorback owns and leases over 2,700 acres of farmland with exclusive hunting rights in the Central Virginia area for our clients.
Much of it is river bottom land containing planted grainfields, oaks ridges, planted pines and cutovers. Many hold farm ponds offering opportunities for mixed bags of ducks and geese. Deer are abundant and some of our land is managed for trophy bucks only. Turkey populations have exploded in recent years. We offer one on one Spring Gobbler Hunts where our experienced guides will do all the calling for you.
We offer Southern Style Dove Hunts on a 110 acre cut cornfield that loads up with doves in the fall. We will transport you to and from your dove station via hay wagon. Once the hunt concludes, feast on the pig roast barbecue served with all the fixings. This makes a great corporate hunt or a perfect day with that special group of buddies. We offer this Dove Hunt only 3 times throughout the season, so you have to call to get on our list and reserve your spot.
Smallmouth on the James River
The Upper James provides some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in the east and maybe... the country. Your host, Brian Bodine, has been fishing the James for the last 14 years and guiding on it for the last 4. Fishing between the Rockfish and Hardware River tributaries, this stretch produces citation smallmouth (5 lbs. or 20 inches) year round. When the bite is on, 50 to 100 fish days are common. Brian Bodine fishes this stretch of the James year round. He can provide you with the local knowledge to get you on the fish and increase your chances on taking your own trophy smallmouth.
Jetboat Service
This area of the James provides ideal habitat for river smallmouth. Numerous rocks and ledges create plenty of structure for the smallmouth to lie in wait for their prey. It's because of this rocky water level that your average fiberglass bass boat would be useless. Our customized jetboat has a steel reinforced hull that is tunneled out allowing it to run in 3 inches of water. Pushed across the James by a Mercury Jet outboard, we can get you into areas that even the canoes cannot get to. And when we find the fish, unlike a raft, we can drift through a product area, motor up and come through it again! Our jetboat also adds a level of safety in that should a thunderstorm pop up, we are only a few minutes of being safely back at the landing. |
