| Property Description |
Alaska is by far the largest state in the United States and home to the largest carnivore in North America, the Alaskan Brown Bear. It is also home to the largest species of caribou, the Barren Ground Caribou along with the largest species of moose, the Alaskan Yukon Moose, which can weigh up to 1,600 lbs. Other game available to hunters include black bear, wolf, and wolverine. Alaska also has some of the finest fishing in the world for halibut, salmon, char, and trout. An Alaskan trip provides unparalleled beauty, adventure, challenge, and is the real "Super Bowl" of hunting for North American Hunters.
Hunt With Us
Jim Roche is a licensed "Registered Alaskan Guide", licensed "Alaskan Transporter", and licensed "Commercial Instrument Rated Pilot" who specializes in low volume, high quality hunting, with very personalized service that starts long before you ever arrive in Alaska. We first begin by taking the time to discuss each trip honestly and thoroughly with each client. No one likes surprises, especially hunters or guides! We describe to each client what they should expect in quantity and quality of game, physical and mental challenges often tested by Alaska's unpredictable weather. We describe what guides expect from each client in the way of patience, mental and physical strength, attitude, and shooting ability. Each trip, whether fully guided, outfitted, or non-guided is a team effort. We help each client select what to pack for their trip and what to leave at home. We assist each client in booking their airline tickets and we can recommend places to overnight when and if necessary. Our equipment is top of the line and our guide area is large. We have our own aircraft, boats, and satellite phones. At the conclusion of each trip we will help our clients in the preparation and shipping of their trophies. We strive for excellence in our field and it shows with consistently high success rates. With the exception of one hunter, all of our guided hunters experienced 100% success in 2003!
Hunting Methods
We greet our clients upon their arrival to the Koliganek, AK airport. From there we will either fly directly to spike camp or travel by boat or plane to base camp. We utilize aircraft exclusively to travel between our various hunting areas and all of our hunts are conducted out of tented camps, whether it be base camp or a spike camp. Our guided hunts are primarily spot and stalk type hunting. We utilize strategic vantage points to glass for game. Once a decision has been made to initiate a stalk we will try to move within a comfortable range for our hunter.
Weather Conditions
August weather in Alaska is fairly stable by Alaskan standards. It consists of cool mornings with warm afternoons. Temperatures range from 45-65 degrees and winds are light. September is a month of change in Alaska. Trees begin to turn color as cool fronts pass through on their way down to the lower 48. Windy days become more common. Light to moderate showers are not uncommon. Temperatures during the first half of September will average between 40 and 60 degrees. In later September temperatures will fall between 30 and 50 degrees. October ushers in colder but more stable air. Temperatures from 20-40 are common and light snow is a possibility. A sunny day in October is hard to beat. Experienced hunters in Alaska turn to a good book and/or a CD Walkman when the weather turns bad. They know that there is nothing that anyone can do about the weather but wait it out. Patience and safety is everything!
