Property Description
Sand Lake is a TREASURE for Walley Fishing! No matter what style of fishing you prefer, Anchor Inn gives you easy access to all. Join the anglers who come from miles around to fish from the Anchor Inn Bridge. Its walkway, just a few feet from our front door, produces everything from stringers of sunfish to buckets of bullhead, wall-mount walleye, and the fight of needlenosed northern pike.

The Bowstring Chain of Lakes offers numerous fishing habitats. Bowstring and Big Sand, both large lakes, have miles of shoreline, scores of sand bars, weed beds, deep holes, bays and islands.

Little Sand Lake is a quiet medium sized lake, calm even when rough water keeps you off the big lakes, and it has many good spots of its own. The winding Bowstring River flows past our docks, clear and unspoiled. It is also where bass fishing is the best. Walleye, northern pike, crappie, sunfish, rock bass, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, and perch all thrive in these beautiful waters.

Picture yourself sitting lazily under a tree, shore fishing along nearly a mile of river frontage. Just downstream is Rice Lake, a natural fish hatchery, with hundreds of acres of sun-warmed shallow water, nearly covered with wild rice. Our setting offers unique opportunities for every type of fisherman.

The Best Fishing Catch:

  • Northern Pike
  • Sunfish

Hunting
Make your reservations early for fall hunting. Our area is well-known for excellent duck hunting, as well as a healthy deer population, black bear, ruffled grouse, and woodcock.

Explore Nature
Nature abounds around Anchor Inn. The Aurora Borealis (or northern lights) supplies frequent breathtaking displays. Area national forest nature trails offer great opportunity for hiking. Or take advantage of our own land, covering nearly 80 acres of wilderness ripe for exploring. Track deer and bear, enjoy the antics of chipmunks, watch beaver build thier domes, gaze at a soaring bald eagle. Relax on the shore as a blue heron glides effortlessly over the water and ducks feed and play in the lily pads. Delight in the laughter or the haunting call of Minnesota's state bird, the loon, while you search for signs of native Indians who onced lived here.

Play
In addition to our playground, enjoy yard games such as badminton, volleyball and horseshoes. Clean sand beaches within a few minutes drive provide ample recreation and a chance to work on your tan. For the water sportsman, the Sand Lakes are great for skiing. Anchor Inn's lodge gives you further opportunity to relax with a large screened porch, pool table and television.

Other Area Attractions
Anchor Inn is nestled in the heart of the Chippewa National Forest. Itasca County has more than 1,000 lakes, countless rivers, streams and small bodies of water...water that rings with a history all its own-silery highway of the Indian, the voyageur, the log drive, the riverboat. Launch from the Anchor Inn dock on the Big Fork Canoe Trail to the border waters. Visit the source of the mighty Mississippi River at Lake Itasca State Park.

As an Anchor Inn guest, you won't run out of things to see, places to go. Iron ore mine tours show the history and future of the Mesabi Iron Range. A scenic drive to International Falls is an easy trip to the Canadian border. Visit ancient Indian burial grounds at the Grand Mound State Park, or the home of Paul Bunyan and Babe at Bemidji, near Lake Itasca. The Forest History Center, Old Central School and Blandin Paper Mill Tours provide an interesting day in Grand Rapids. The Lost 40, just a few minutes from Anchor Inn, is a parcel of land preserved by the state, that was never logged, leaving a stand of huge virgin timber. Several state parks and numerous scenic sights are in the area. The largest nesting population of bald eagles in the continental U.S. make their home here. Sightings of these magnificent birds perched on a limb along a lake, or several soaring in a group, effortlessly riding the air waves, are common.

Anchor Inn is centrally located among several towns offering all the comforts of home, with hospitals, shopping, movies, golf, tennis, bowling, churches of most denominations, and nearby restaurants.
